Performance
Air Intake Kits from aFe give your vehicle
the air it needs
by replacing the restrictive factory intake
system with a high flow conical air filter,
and providing isolation from hot engine
air. One of the distinguishing features of
aFe filters is the pleat height and pleat spacing – generally
25% taller and more openly spaced than other
performance filters. The
more
open the pleats...the better the airflow.

Tech Tip - Talking Parts To A Mechanic |
|

|
Every month people call out of the blue to let
me know their mechanic charged them much more
for a part than the price listed in the RockAuto.com catalog. They
usually want me to
send them a paper copy of the catalog that
they can shove under their mechanic’s nose or they at least
want me to agree the mechanic overcharged.
I do neither of these things and not just
because it would take several big trees to
make a paper copy of the catalog nor because
I do not like to get involved in other peoples’ misunderstandings.
It is perfectly fine if mechanics include a
mark-up on parts prices while doing the profit
margin calculations in their business plan.
Their own local source for parts might be relatively
expensive compared to RockAuto.com too. Few
of us would confront a restaurant owner
that charges $1.50 for a glass of Coke because
we know an entire liter of Coke is available
for $0.99 at the grocery store down the
street.
Auto parts cost a lot more than a Coke and
I can understand feeling taken advantage
of if the $437 radiator on the Mechanic’s
bill “really” only costs $152 plus shipping. The ALLDATA
service is used by many mechanics to create
parts and labor cost estimates. I looked up
a random Chevy, 1994 Caprice 5.7L, on ALLDATA
and found the OEM, retail parts prices listed
were anywhere from 60% to more than 300% higher
than prices in the RockAuto.com catalog.
Thinking you are paying $15 extra for a knock
sensor might not seem so bad but paying $150
more for an ACDelco alternator might startle
anyone.
Talk to the mechanic before the repair to prevent price misunderstandings
or if you want to bring your own parts. Mechanics are used to installing
parts that customers walk in with like fancy wheels, performance
exhaust, or carburetors. Mechanics are usually happy to install
other parts carried in by customers if there is an up-front discussion
about the cost of diagnosing the repair, scheduling the repair,
the cost of reinstalling a part that fails under warranty, etc.
Some parts might be expensive or hard to find even for the mechanic
and they will be happy if a customer walks in with quality parts
ready to be installed at a scheduled time.
I do this myself when a repair is too hard,
too urgent, etc. The clutch in my wife’s car recently started
slipping badly. I emailed a local transmission
shop in advance to get an installation
price for my clutch kit. Up-front I gave them
the ok to also repair or replace incidental
parts (they resurfaced the flywheel). They
were happy to have a vehicle to repair on an
open Friday afternoon and the right clutch
kit. ALLDATA correctly said it would take the
professional mechanic an afternoon, but it
would have taken me a week to replace that
clutch. I was so happy, I gave the mechanic
a RockAuto magnet!

| 1973 Buick Riviera GS Stage 1 |
 |
Hi,
My 1973 Buick Riviera GS Stage 1
is finished at last! A lot of RockAuto
parts have been used, and I am just waiting
for two more orders for small bits and pieces
as I write. You guys are so efficient and fast
with the parts, not to mention incredibly reasonably
priced.
Thanks
for helping me get my ride back together.
She's been repainted and retrimmed, I made
all the new seat covers myself, exactly like
the originals but with the individual scallops
to the rear bench. Other
than the custom paint and the tri-colour interior,
she is stock...which just goes to show
what an amazing car she must have been way
back in
'73.
Cheers,
