Neither our manufacturers nor RockAuto.com have tried to take unfair advantage of the problems caused by skyrocketing gas prices and the threat of shortages. Breaking the High Test Habit

Now, more than ever, the high price of high-test gas warrants the weaning process. If regular (87 octane) is specified for your engine, it should run well on that fuel, and there's no need to bump up to a higher grade. The main reason for using a higher octane is because the engine was designed to use that grade, which is noted in the owner's manual.

Another reason might be if the engine has been neglected and runs poorly on regular. If your car is hard to start, knocks and pings on hills, runs after the ignition is shut off (that's called"dieseling") or if it runs rough, opting for the high-octane pump may help. But that's usually a temporary fix. Be car care aware: ask your service technician what's causing these symptoms and take corrective measures.
