Repair Mistakes & Blunders
Repair Mistakes & Blunders

As a young boy, I was always curious about the mechanics of everything, especially cars. At ten years old and following guidelines from a Popular Science magazine, I decided to surprise my mother by giving her 1962 Ford Galaxy 500XL a tune-up!

With money I earned mowing lawns and returning roadside collected pop bottles, I bought eight spark plugs and proceeded to do my “tune-up.“ After the new plugs installed, it was time to check the ignition points. They were slightly corroded so I filed them a bit and then gapped them using the paper from a matchbook cover. I finished my work and went to start the car. The starter engaged, the engine cranked, but it would not start! After a few minutes of shear terror and planning my escape, I calmed down, reviewed my work, and found that I forgot to remove the piece of matchbook from between the points! I removed it, and the Galaxy started right up. Lesson learned.

RockAuto is my go-to source for my car parts - I appreciate the value and quick delivery service for my continued shade tree wrenching at 72 years old!

Plastic Fan Blades
Tom's Story

Instead of electric radiator fan assemblies, truck engines and some car engines still have a radiator fan bolted onto a radiator fan clutch that is mounted to the engine's belt-driven water pump. The fan is typically plastic and relatively easy to replace (remove and reinstall bolts). Engine manufacturers like plastic fans because they are less costly and heavy compared to metal. Plastic blades also can be molded into a wider variety of shapes to better push, pull and/or scoop air.

Plastic blades are typically more fragile, and some original equipment (OE) designs and materials are especially likely to break. Having the plastic blade fail first can actually be a good thing if it means less damage to other parts or not having a dropped tool turned into a missile.

Plastic Fan Blades

While it is important to replace a broken radiator fan blade as soon as possible, it is also important to diagnose what caused the fan blade to break in the first place to avoid damaging a brand new fan.

  • Did something obvious like a dropped tool, unlucky squirrel or chunk of ice strike and break the fan blade?
  • Has the OE fan blade simply become brittle after years of heat and/or chemical exposure? Do the remaining fan blades also snap off too easily?
  • Rev the engine to see if it is rocking excessively because of a broken motor mount. Are there signs of damage where the fan has been hitting the radiator or radiator fan shroud?
  • Is the water pump leaking and/or does the pump's shaft move from side to side?
  • Does the radiator fan clutch wobble because its bearings are failing or it is otherwise coming apart internally?
  • Does the radiator fan clutch have the fan blades spinning too fast when the vehicle is traveling at highway speeds? On the highway, is there a roar coming from under the hood as the wildly spinning fan is blasted by a wall of air coming through the grille?

A cracked or missing fan blade means both the fan's mass and airflow are out of balance, generating noise and potentially vibrating the fan clutch and/or water pump shafts which may eventually cause coolant leaks and/or damage bearings. The fan, clutch and water pump depend on each other. It is often a good idea to replace the radiator fan blade, water pump and radiator fan clutch as a set to avoid a cycle of damaging new parts.

Find new Radiator Fan Blades, Radiator Fan Clutches and Water Pumps for your specific vehicle under "Cooling System" in the RockAuto.com catalog. Ready-made Water Pump & Fan Clutch Assembly kits are also available under "Cooling System" for some vehicles. Motor Mounts are found under "Engine."

Peter's 1973 Jaguar E-Type
Peter's 1973 Jaguar E-Type

Here is my 1973 Series 3 V12 E-Type Jaguar which I've owned for only a year. I've owned various Jaguar saloons for the past 37 years, but had always wanted an E-Type. This car has a manual transmission and the optional factory hardtop. It has never been restored, just repaired and maintained as required. The previous owner had it for 40 years, and it was clearly a hard decision to sell it. I have bought brake pads, thermostats, a hose kit, plug leads, spark plugs and a power steering pump seal kit from RockAuto.

I'm always impressed with the great service and speedy shipping from RockAuto.
