Repair Mistakes & Blunders

My wife drives an '09 Chrysler minivan with about 130K on it. We purchased it at 75K and have been keeping it on the road with good maintenance practices and sourcing parts through RockAuto.

Oil generally gets changed in the 4-5000 mile range. But, during the last oil change things unfortunately got a little sideways. The procedure started normally enough - oil was drained, new drain plug back in, filter replaced and no mess on the garage floor. All that was left was to refill with new oil.

I placed a nice wide funnel in the fill hole and grabbed my jug of oil. I opened it, and as I have always done, stabbed my thumb through the foil safety seal and proceeded to fill the engine. I then noticed a flash in the stream of oil. I stopped, looked in the funnel and it was empty. I pulled the funnel, looked into the valve cover and saw nothing. Maybe I had just caught a flash from the work light I had in the engine compartment? Worry set in. I re-looked at all the same things one more time, then investigated the oil jug. Through a bit of forensics, I tried to reassemble the foil seal and yes, about a third of it was missing. It was not in the jug, the funnel or the fill hole.

As the valve cover has a baffle that precludes direct contact with the valve train, I inserted fingers then a dental mirror and could neither see nor feel any foil. Convinced the foil was in the valve train, I removed the valve cover. I flipped it over, and there was the piece of foil!

In retrospect, I was lucky to see the foil go by. It could have easily made it past me, and I would have never known, until a bigger problem arose.

Guess who will now be completely removing the foil safety seals instead of just puncturing them with his thumb?

When the Sensor Stops Sensing

Most late-model vehicles have a speed sensor at each wheel hub for anti-lock brakes (ABS), traction control and navigation systems. The original speed sensor designs typically aimed a sensor at a tooth wheel (ABS tone ring) attached to the hub or axle. The alternating teeth and gaps on the spinning tone ring cause changes in the magnetic field that are picked up by the sensor and translated into speed by a computer. If the tone ring gets covered with grime or the gap between the sensor and tone ring is too big or small, then the sensor stops sending a signal and the ABS or another warning light on the dash illuminates.

A newer speed sensor design completely integrates the wheel speed sensor into the wheel bearing and hub assembly. These are often "active" systems that continuously send a square wave signal to the computer even when the wheel hub is not turning. The wave frequency increases as the hub spins faster. An active sensor indicates which direction the wheel is rotating as well as its speed.

When the speed sensor is built into the hub, there is no toothy tone ring to keep clean or gap between the ring and sensor to maintain. The sensor and "impulse wheel" (has gaps similar to a tone ring but uses patches of magnetic material instead of teeth) may be safely out of sight, deep inside the hub.

However, with some designs the magnetized impulse wheel may be integrated into the bearing seal or another outer surface on the wheel hub. Dirt and brake dust will accumulate on these surfaces over time. The slight magnetism of the impulse wheel will attract iron dust as well. Enough grime may accumulate on the surface of the hub to alter the magnetic field of the impulse wheel. When the sensor's output becomes garbled, the computer will light up the ABS or other warning light on the dash.

It is often hard or impossible to know if the impulse wheel is near the surface or deep inside the hub. So, it is always a good idea to keep the inner surfaces (see photo below) of the wheel hub clean. Wiping the grime off the surface of an old hub may be all it takes to get the wheel speed sensor working again. I often use lots of anti-seize grease when I install new parts, but putting grease on the surface of a new wheel hub is a bad idea because it will catch more debris.

Chris' 1999 Toyota Solara

This is my 1999 Toyota Solara. It is considered a somewhat rare Toyota as it has a 3.0L V6 with a 5 speed manual transmission! I've owned the car since 2004 and use it as a daily driver. It now has 241,000 miles and still runs and drives great!

I have recently used parts from RockAuto to maintain the fuel system (fuel filter, fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator). I have also bought various gaskets and oil filters in the past for my car.
