Sender

Temperature Sender / Sensors measure the coolant temperature. The temperature the sensor reads is then sent to the vehicle ECU (Engine Control Unit). The ECU adjusts vehicle settings to run at its optimal level.

Signs of a failing Temperature Sender / Sensor:

  • How does it look? Cracks, leaks, and corrosion can lead to a faulty sensor (see images below for examples of failed sensors)
  • Inaccurate engine temperature readings on temperature gauge inside the vehicle
    • A digital volt meter will tell you if your sensor is operating at proper factory specifications
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Is the check engine light on? A bad sensor will throw a code and set off a check engine light. A trouble code will be stored.

What else should be inspected or replaced?

  • Check upper/lower coolant hoses for cracks, leaks or deterioration
  • Check the radiator for cracks, leaks and deterioration
  • Check/replace the radiator cap
  • Check the coolant level. Always refer to the owner's manual to find out what type of coolant is right for your vehicle.
