What is the difference between a Solid and Dual Mass Flywheel?
Solid Flywheel: Provides a direct contact between the engine and clutch assembly. Some clutch pressure plates contain springs to help dampen vibrations, but in general, a solid flywheel cannot dampen engine vibration as well as a dual mass flywheel. Solid Flywheels tend to be cheaper than dual mass flywheels and can also be resurfaced to reduce the need for full flywheel replacement. The single piece constructions gives solid flywheels a greater heat capacity to prevent warping which is ideal for racing applications.
Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF): Consists of two flywheels with springs in the middle to act as a dampener. The two flywheel halves are able to move independently of each other within a limited range. The springs help absorb engine vibration which reduces wear on the transmission and the rest of the drivetrain. The benefits of a dual mass flywheel are smooth operation and dampening of noise, vibration, and harshness. Unlike Solid Flyhweels, Dual Mass Flywheels are not able to be resurfaced and instead typically need to be fully replaced each time the clutch is replaced.
