The traditional style refrigerant containers featured a pierce top valve. Manufacturers are now required to use a self-sealing valve in the containers to reduce pollutants, but it is important to note that the can taps used for a self-sealing can and a pierce-top can are not interchangeable. Using this style can tap on a self-sealing container will destroy the seal, leak refrigerant, or trap the refrigerant inside.
